Know the local sign rules

Columbus (city right-of-way). Columbus Consolidated Government runs an "Operation Illegal Sign Roundup" to pull signs from city right-of-way, which covers streets, sidewalks, utility poles, medians and the strip next to the street. The city has said it will ask the court for the maximum $1,000 fine (Ledger-Enquirer, Feb. 2025). Business signs on your own property go through the city's Inspections and Code sign process.

Georgia state highways. Georgia Code 32-6-51 makes it unlawful to place a sign in the right-of-way of any public road without authorization. GDOT pulls them, and violations can bring a fine (GDOT).

Phenix City and Alabama highways. ALDOT treats unofficial signs on state right-of-way as encroachments, removes them and stores them for up to 90 days (ALDOT sign manual). Check with Phenix City about city streets before placing signs.
